Last month, we learned that Air Canada, our neighbor to the north's largest airline, was changing its pet policy to allow small dogs and cats to ride in its airplane cabins. For many small pet owners, this is great news -- there are any number of horror stories out there about the perils of traveling with a pet stowed in an airplane's underbelly. But others are decrying the move to bring pets onboard on the grounds that they can be health hazards to allergy and asthma sufferers. click here for full story |

Since Ivan Pavlov worked with dogs in the late 1800's to study their behavior, few scientists have used dogs as a model to study the thoughts and behaviors of the species that lives closest to us. As a matter of fact, man's best friend may be the most taken-for-granted species by scientists working in the cognition and behavior fields.

The best movie I saw during the week-long SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Tex., was not I Love You, Man (though it was awesome!) or the Iron Maiden documentary Flight 666 (excellent!) or Sam Raimi's unfinished cut of Drag Me To Hell (killer!). No, my favorite movie was a brisk 80-minute documentary by first-time, San Francisco-based filmmaker Geralyn Pezanoski. But after wowing, and reducing everyone to sniveling tears, Mine was awarded the SXSW Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature. Click here to read full article from Popwatch |

Pet owners will often go to any length to protect the health of their furry and feathered friends. Now a new survey suggests that one in three smokers would consider kicking the habit after learning that smoking poses a danger to pets. Secondhand smoke causes almost 50,000 deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year, and there’s a mountain of evidence that secondhand smoke can affect a pet’s health as well. George Korin is a New York City veterinarian who has “seen bronchial disease in both dogs and cats, either due to home environment or air quality.” Studies have linked smoke exposure to oral cancer and lymphoma in cats and nasal and lung cancer in dogs, says Korin, who was not involved in the new survey.
